Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the effect of bifocal versus trifocal diffractive Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) implantation on the visual quality after phacoemulsification in patients with cataracts.
Setting:
1. Department of Ophthalmology, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul, Korea
2. Department of Ophthalmology, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seongnam, Korea
3. Laboratory of Ocular Regenerative Medicine and Immunology, Seoul Artificial Eye Center, Seoul National University Hospital Biomedical Research Institute, Seoul, Korea
Methods:
Three types of diffractive IOLs were implanted in patients with cataract who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification. Medical records of the 64 eyes in 46 patients were retrospecitvley reviewed. Trifocal (AT LISA tri 839MP) and two bifocal (AcrySof IQ ReSTOR and Tecnis MF ZMB00) IOLs were implanted into each 30, 17, and 17 eyes. The uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity, refractive errors, contrast sensitivity, and patient satisfaction were measured at 1 week and 1 month after surgery.
Results:
The uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuites did not differ significantly between groups. One month after surgery, the mean refractive errors were -0.08 diopter (D) in the AT LISA tri 839MP group, +0.16 D in the AcrySof IQ ReSTOR group, and +0.31 D in the Tecnis MF ZMB00 group (p = 0.004). Differences in contrast sensitivity were not significant between groups. The rate of spectacle independency was significantly higher in the trifocal group.
Conclusions:
Bifocal and trifocal diffractive IOL implantation seems to be comparatively effective on the improvement of visual qualities, although spectacle independency is higher in trifocal IOL.
