Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the ability of the Precizon Presbyopic Multifocal Intraocular Lens (MIOL; Ophtec, Groningen, The Netherlands) to provide near, intermediate and distance vision in patients undergoing cataract extraction / refractive lens exchange (RLE) in a multicenter clinical trial. The lens has a new optic design for better IOL dislocation tolerance and high pupil independency.

Setting:

European multicenter study.

Methods:

Prospective, open label, single-arm, multicenter clinical trial. The main outcome parameters were LogMAR corrected/uncorrected visual acuity scores at distance (uncorrected distance visual acuity, UDVA 4 m), intermediate (uncorrected intermediate visual acuity, UIVA 80 cm) and near (uncorrected near visual acuity, UNVA 40 cm), manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) and defocus curve. Lenses were available in powers ranging from +10.0 D to +30.0 D in 0.5 D increments with add power of +2.75 D.

Results:

Evaluated were 61 patients after bilateral MIOL implantation. Mean bilateral visual acuity scores were UDVA -0.02 ± 0.08, UIVA 0.06 ± 0.11, and UNVA 0.12 ± 0.13. Distance corrected visual acuity scores were CDVA -0.01 ± 0.09, DCIVA 0.08 ± 0.12 and DCNVA 0.14 ± 0.12. CNVA was 0.06 ± 0.11. The mean spherical equivalent was -0.12 ± 0.38. The mean sphere was 0.07 ± 0.38 and the mean refractive cylinder was -0.24 ± 0.40. The defocus curves showed good functional visual acuity scores at far, intermediate and near distance. Patient satisfaction questionnaire revealed typical outcomes following MIOL implantation.

Conclusions:

Bilateral Precizon Presbyopic MIOL implantation effectively provides presbyopic patients with good uncorrected near, intermediate and distance visual acuity.
