Abstract Details
Purpose:
To investigate first clinical outcomes of a recently introduced hydrophobic trifocal intraocular lens (PhysIOL FineVision HP) and compare the results to the outcomes of a hydrophilic trifocal intraocular lens (PhysIOL FineVision) implanted in the contralateral eyes of the same patients.
Setting:
Semmelweis University, Department of Ophthalmology, Budapest, Hungary
Methods:
Twenty-five patients with clinically significant senile cataract and without any concomitant general or ophthalmic disease were enrolled into this prospective study. All patients were implanted with a recently CE approved hydrophobic trifocal intraocular lens (PhysIOL FineVision HP) in one eye and a hydrophilic trifocal intraocular lens (PhysIOL FineVision) in the contralateral eye. The eye selection was randomized. All patients were followed up for up to six months postoperative and data was collected on: Uncorrected and distance corrected visual acuities at near, intermediate and far distance under mesopic and photopic conditions; Defocus Curve; Contrast Sensitivity under mesopic and photopic conditions.
Results:
The mean outcomes on uncorrected near, intermediate and distance visual acuity range from 0.0 logMAR to 0.15 logMAR depending on the tested distance and with no statistically significant difference between the study groups. With distance correction the outcomes improve with mean values between ‑0.05 logMAR and 0.1 logMAR (p>0.05 between the study groups). The defocus curve shows continuum VA, smaller 0.2logMAR between -3.5D and 0.5D. Contrast sensitivity is in the expected range with p>0.05 between the groups.
Conclusions:
The recently CE approved hydrophobic trifocal IOL (PhysIOL FineVision HP) shows a very good restoration of near, intermediate and distance visual acuity with no significant differences to the established hydrophilic version (PhysIOL FineVision). The introduction of a new trifocal IOL with hydrophobic material expands the variety of available multifocal IOLs with the chance to better adapt the IOL choice to surgeons preference and/or patients needs. Mid- and longterm positive effects of this IOL material like reduced PCO rate are expected but need to be confirmed in studies with longer follow-up observations.
