Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism, elevation, Fourier indices, ectasia screening index and thickness of the cornea, pupil diameter and anterior chamber depth in normal eyes with the anterior eye segment swept source optical coherence tomography
Setting:
Clinical Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine and Division of Dentistry in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland.
Methods:
70 eyes of 70 normal subjects (age ranged from 23 to 52 years) were included in the study. Exclusion criteria were: ophthalmic and systemic diseases which presence or treatment directly affect cornea. Analyzed corneal parameters included: anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism; flat and steep corneal power (Ks, Kf), cylinder axis, average keratometry (AvgK), average central corneal power (ACCP), mean and maximum 4mm central and peripheral anterior and posterior elevation (µm), 3 and 6 mm Fourier indices (spherical, regular, asymmetry, higher-order), central corneal thickness, thinnest thickness (value location). Other analyzes parameters included pupil diameter (mm) and anterior chamber depth (ACD, mm)
Results:
The mean K readings were Ks/Kf 43,9 (SD1,92)/43,0 (SD1,87); mean astigmatism was 0,92 D (SD0,75). Mean ACCP was 42,9 D (SD2,1). Mean maximum posterior central and peripheral elevation was significantly higher compared to anterior elevation: +18 µm (SD 7,23), -32 µm (SD 16,7); +10 µm (SD4), -14 µm (SD10) respectively. Mean 6 mm higher order irregularity was higher compared to 3 mm: 0,15 (SD0,07), 0,12 (SD0,4). The thinnest point was located at average of 0,87mm from corneal apex and had an average thickness of 515 µm (SD35). In 74.53% of eyes, the thinnest point was located in the inferotemporal quadrant
Conclusions:
The information on corneal and anterior eye chamber parameters obtained with the swept source optical coherence tomography system from normal eyes provides a reference data for comparison with diseased corneas
