Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the visual performance achieved with four different types of trifocal diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Vithas Medimar International Hospital, Alicante, Spain.

Methods:

Prospective comparative study enrolling a total of 91 eyes of 46 patients with ages ranging from 48 to 84 years old. All eyes underwent successful cataract surgery with implantation of one of four different types of trifocal diffractive IOLs: FineVision (PhysIOL) (31 eyes, 16 patients), Acrysof IQ PanOptix (Alcon) (20 eyes, 10 patients), AT.LISA tri 839MP (Carl Zeis Meditec) (20 eyes, 10 patients), and RayOne (Rayner) (20 eyes, 10 patients). Visual performance and refraction were evaluated during a 3-month follow-up.

Results:

Statistically significant differences were found between IOL groups in uncorrected (p=0.024) (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuities (CDVA) (p<0.001) as well as in uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) (p<0.001). Specifically, UDVA was significantly better in the PanOptix group compared to FineVision (p=0.010) and AT.LISA IOL (p=0.036) groups. Likewise, UNVA was significantly better in the FineVision group than in the other three groups (p<0.001). Concerning the defocus curve, significant differences were found between IOL groups in visual acuities measured for defocus levels ranging from +1.0 (p<0.001) to -2.5 D (p=0.002).

Conclusions:

There are significant differences in the visual performance achieved with each of the four types of trifocal diffractive IOL evaluated. Therefore, an appropriate selection of the IOL to implant should be performed considering the level of matching between patient’s visual demands and optical performance of the IOL.
