Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes with extended depth-of-focus intraocular lens TECNIS Symfony® (J&J Vision, Santa Ana CA, USA) and trifocal AcrySof® IQ PanOptix(Alcon Laboratories, Inc.,Fort Worth, TX, USA)

Setting:

Six-month prospective study, Department of Ophthalmology, Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

100 eyes underwent cataract surgery with implantation of the EDOF-IOL (TECNIS® Symfony, ZXR00) and 87 eyes underwent cataract surgery with implantation of trifocal IOL (AcrySof® IQ PanOptix, TFNT00). Monocular and binocular uncorrected distant(6m), intermediate(66cm) and near(40cm) visual acuity, defocus curves, contrast sensitivity, spectacle dependence at near vision were evaluated at 3 and 6 months after the surgery. Ten patients had PanOptix in one eye and Symfony in the other with mix and match.

Results:

At 6 months postoperatively, Distant visual acuity(VA) was PanOptix 0.04 ± 0.06, Symfony 0.04 ± 0.08 , Intermediate VA was PanOptix 0.11 ± 0.08, Symfony 0.12 ± 0.14, and near VA was PanOptix 0.12 ± 0.11, Symfony 0.25 ± 0.13 log MAR. At 6 months after surgery, there was no difference in the distant and intermediate VA between two groups. But the near VA was statistically significant better in the PanOptix group(P = 0.00). In defocus curve, two groups showed statistically significant differences between -2D and -4D (p=0.001). The Symfony group showed better outcome in contrast sensitivity than the PanOptix group

Conclusions:

Both the PanOptix and Symfony IOL showed good distant and intermediate visual acuity, and PanOptix showed better visual outcome at near distance. Mix and match implantation of trifocal IOL with an EDOF-IOL provide better binocular intermediate and near visual acuity than monocular intermediate and near visual acuity
