Abstract Details

Purpose:

Successful clinical practice is reliant on frequent audit of clinical outcomes following interventions. This study examines the results of the PanOptix trifocal lens in combination with use of the Verion image guidance system, which allows accurate keratometry and precise insertion of the lens to enhance visual outcomes. We present our results of this system when used with the PanOptix lens.

Setting:

Patients undergoing cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery at the Nuffield Health Hereford Hospital (private hospital) were the population group in question.

Methods:

A retrospective analysis was performed of patients who had undergone cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery using the PanOptix (standard or toric) lens, by one consultant surgeon. Patient notes were interrogated to collect data for visual acuity for both far and near vision, pre-op and post-op refractive outcomes, patient comments and any complications. In addition, those patients who had had surgery at least 6 months earlier were contacted for a brief telephone survey, which asked six (up to 11 depending on response) questions, standardized for all patients who took part regarding the efficacy and any side effects of their surgery

Results:

68 eyes (40 patients) were identified that had had surgery. All eyes operated on delivered a visual acuity of 6/9 or better and 78% achieved 6/6 or better. 99% of the patients achieved an unaided visual acuity of N8 or better, with 85% achieving N5 or better. 85% of eyes were within 0.5 dioptre of emmetropia, achieved with a minor complication rate of 9%. 18 patients (32 eyes) were contactable for telephone survey. 56% reported haloes and 6% had stopped driving due to these. 22% required reading glasses for reading small print, while 22% required reading glasses for other tasks.

Conclusions:

In conclusion, the PanOptix lens delivers excellent visual outcomes for patients undergoing cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery. This is likely a combination of the design of this contemporaneous trifocal lens, as well as the choice and accuracy of placement of the lens, enabled by use of the Verion imaging system.
