Abstract Details

Purpose:

The extended depth of field “EDOF” Lucidis intraocular lens (IOL) is a one-piece, foldable, multizonal refractive-aspheric bifocal lens with closed C-loop haptics. The central aspherical element is supposedly optimizing intermediate and near vision. The aim of this study is to analyze the visual outcome in patients having undergone cataract surgery with this new lens.

Setting:

retrospective multicentric study

Methods:

The study was conducted in three different sites with two different surgeons. Main inclusion criteria was the presence of a cataract in at least one eye and the main exclusion criteria was a corneal astigmatism higher than 0.75D, a corneal and/or retinal disease as well as a neurological or cognitive issue. Patients included in the study received a LUCIDIS EDOF lens during cataract surgery in one or two eyes.

Results:

41 patients enrolled in the study received an EDOF Lucidis IOL during cataract surgery. Mean age was 62 year-old and mean preoperative visual acuity (VA) was 20/40. At two weeks post-operative, refraction error was on average 0.2 Diopters (D) in the right eye and 0.05D in the left eye. Mean monocular vision for distance was 20/25 in the right eye and in the left eye. Near vision was in 1.5 and 1.6 Parinaud in the right eye and the left eye respectively. Mean binocular vision was 20/20 and 1.3 Parinaud. No distant optical correction was prescribed in patients and less than 10% of patients required glasses pre-scription for near vision.

Conclusions:

This study demonstrates in a real cataract clinic the EDOF Lucidis IOL adaptation. Distance VA outcome is sensibly equivalent to a monofocal lens whereas near VA approaches results obtained with diffractive implants. Moreover intraoperative implantation is simple, no centering issue of the implant nor side effects were reported including halos. More clinical studies are needed to show the benefits and drawbacks of this lens.
