Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Clinical Outcomes, Spectacle independence and overall Patient Satisfaction after bilateral implantation of Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOL (MINI WELL, SIFI).

Setting:

Private practice, Karachi, Pakistan.

Methods:

Bilateral cataract extraction with implantation of EDOF (MINI WELL, SIFI) IOL was done in 30 eyes of 15 patients. Inclusion criteria were: no previous ocular surgery, pre-op astigmatism ≤ 1.50D, absence of any ocular disease and patient’s desire for spectacle independence with realistic expectations. Binocular Uncorrected (UDVA) Distance Visual Acuity, Binocular Uncorrected Intermediate Visual Acuity (UIVA) and Uncorrected Near Visual Acuity (UNVA) were evaluated at 1st week, 1st, 3rd and 6th month post-operatively. Photic phenomenon (glare and haloes), spectacle independence and patient satisfaction were assessed by a self-administered questionnaire.

Results:

Mean age was 54±7.0 (range 47-68) years. Out of 15, 13 (86%) patients were spectacle independent for distance while 14 (93%) were spectacle free for intermediate and near at 1 month. Mean UDVA, UIVA and UNVA was LogMAR 0.00, 0.10 and 0.10 respectively. Scoring of satisfaction (Out of 10) was as follows: General satisfaction= 9, Quality of reading= 8, Computer activities= 9, Day driving= 9, Night driving= 8. At the end of 6th month 20% and 13% patient often required glasses for far and reading respectively, while 3 patients were complaining of minimal glare and haloes.

Conclusions:

With an effective ongoing surgical progress, presbyopia correcting IOLs have given a hope for the patients to achieve good quality of vision with almost complete spectacle independence after cataract surgery. Though we studied a small proportion of patients, their satisfaction with EDOF (MINI WELL, SIFI) IOL was very high. 86% of patients stated that they have chosen a right option for spectacle independence and have recommended this IOL to others.
