Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the refractive outcomes of eyes implanted with the Juvene® intraocular lens (LensGen, Inc, Irvine, CA), a unique, modular, curvature-changing, fluid-optics intraocular lens (IOL). The Juvene IOL is designed to provide monofocal-like distance vision while utilizing an active extended depth of focus mechanism to provide improved intermediate and near vision.

Setting:

This study was conducted at two sites: 1) CODET Vision Institute in Tijuana, Mexico; and 2) OKUMED in Monterrey, Mexico. The subjects were split evenly between the two sites (22 eyes from each).

Methods:

Patients underwent standard small-incision cataract phacoemulsification followed by implantation of a Juvene IOL. The JIOL consists of 2 components, a base lens with circumferential, capsule-filling haptics, and a fluid lens with a flexible anterior membrane that rests within the base lens. The JIOL provides incremental refractive power for a continuous range of vision from distance to near. Postoperative vision measures included best corrected distance visual acuities (BCDVA), distance-corrected intermediate and near visual acuities (DCIVA, and DCNVA), defocus curves, and mesopic contrast sensitivity with and without glare. All measures were conducted using the clinical trials suite of the M&S Technologies system.

Results:

Forty-four eyes (mean age 66 ± 7.5 years) were implanted with the Juvene IOL and assessed 6 months postoperatively. Mean (and 95% confidence interval) monocular BCDVA was logMAR 0.00 (20/20; -0.02 – 0.03). Mean DCIVA and DCNVA were 0.10 (20/25; 0.07 – 0.13) at intermediate and 0.22 (20/32-1; 0.18 – 0.26) at near distances. Defocus curve testing demonstrated greater than 1.5 D depth of focus at logMAR 0.2 and greater than 2.5 D depth of focus at logMAR 0.3. Contrast sensitivity functions both with and without glare were indistinguishable from a monofocal measured with the same system.

Conclusions:

These results suggest the biomimetic Juvene IOL succeeds in providing a full range of vision from distance through near for patients made aphakic after cataract surgery. Quality of vision, as assessed by contrast sensitivity, is similar to that of a monofocal lens. In addition, the Juvene IOL can be implanted using a surgeon’s standard technique.
