Sulcoflex piggyback intraocular lens in pseudophakic patients

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present our experience with a pseudophakic piggyback intraocular lens (IOL) (Sulcoflex; Rayner Intraocular Lenses Ltd) in patients with residual refractive error that desired increased spectacle independence following cataract surgery with a monofocal IOL.

Setting:

Ophthalmology department of a tertiary center (Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João, Porto, Portugal).

Methods:

This is a retrospective study that included consecutive eyes in which a Sulcoflex was implanted. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) were evaluated.

Results:

In this study, 10 patients were included. All patients achieved an UDVA of 0.1 logMAR (Snellen 20/25) or better. All patients achieved an UNVA of Jaeger 4 or better. No complications were reported such as uveitis, iris chafing, glaucoma, explantation, or interlenticular opacification.

Conclusions:

The Sulcoflex IOL may be a safe and effective method for enhancing the refractive outcome in pseudophakic eyes, providing good UDVA and UNVA. Appropriate patient selection and counseling, as well as correct preoperative measurements and intraoperative techniques, can result in excellent outcomes with minimal risk of complications.
