Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a new and versatile software for cataract and refractive lens exchange surgeons involved in clinical practice and/or clinical research.

Setting:

Private practice in the UK

Methods:

The software was used by a single surgeon to log cataract and refractive lens exchange activity and analyse the results of the surgery in a robust and sophisticated way. It was used to record all routine activity over a 6 month period and analyse the outcomes for standard reporting as well as for clinical research. The software was used to analyse data leading to abstract submission to an international conference.

Results:

CLEARlog was found to be easy to use, intuitive, and produced a variety of outcomes reports. Essential reports included posterior capsule rupture rate, refractive outcomes accuracy, and loss of best corrected visual acuity. Custom reports can be prepared with multiple levels of filtering to allow bespoke and robust data analysis. Patient reported outcomes and satisfaction could also be recorded. It was possible to prepare data for a clinical audit and submit this for peer review to an international conference.

Conclusions:

CLEARlog was developed for desktop and notebook computers, smartphone and tablet devices, and can be used as a web-based or App based tool. It includes risk stratification, data entry in basic view for essential reports or expanded views for multi-level reports. It also allows data capture for patient reported outcomes and satisfaction. Many fields can be set as defaults to allow rapid entry of data, with all other fields being very intuitive to use. It is suggested that CLEARlog presents a useful new opportunity for surgeons to easily record their surgical activity and analyse the outcomes.
