Abstract Details

Purpose:

Describe results and complications of our initial experience with the novel 'flange technique' for IOL scleral fixation.

Setting:

Edith Wolfson medical center, Holon, Israel.

Methods:

A retrospective surgical case series of our first 20 patients with late spontaneous "in-the-bag" IOL subluxation/dislocation who were operated in the Edith Wolfson Medical Center, during the years 2019-2020. All patients underwent IOL scleral fixation using the 'flange technique' with 6-0 prolene suture material, by two surgeons. Patients were evaluated for visual acuity, refraction, IOP, and intra and postoperative complications.

Results:

Average follow-up time was 8 weeks. UCVA improved from a mean of 6/38 to 6/15. Eighteen cases demonstrated good centration of the IOL after surgery. In one case an additional flange was added due to IOL tilt. In one case the flange was shortened due to extrusion. No other complications were noted.

Conclusions:

The 'flange technique' for IOL scleral fixation is effective for the repair of IOL subluxation with good stability and centration of the IOL. Visual acuity improved in all cases. In 2 cases a secondary operation was required. A longer follow-up period is necessary to further assess the long-term results of this promising technique.
