Centration of three different multifocal intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the centration of three different multifocal intraocular lenses with different haptic designs.

Setting:

Retrospective case series

Methods:

Three different intraocular lenses (IOL) (Johnson & Johnson TECNIS Symfony® ZXR00, ZEISS AT LISA® tri 839MP, RAYNER RayOne® Trifocal) were implanted in patients with cataract. The post-surgical retroillumination images were measured with Adobe® photoshop program. The geometric center of the three IOLs was compared with the geometric center of the pupil and the limbus.

Results:

Data were collected from 15 patients (female=8, male=7) with a mean age of 69 years ± 9,7 (SD). For each IOL-type there were 5 patients who had bilateral IOL implantation (n=10/each group) with a mean follow up of 94 days (range 14 to 385 days). The mean decentration of the TECNIS Symfony®/ ZEISS AT LISA® tri 839MP/ RAYNER RayOne® Trifocal was 0,38 ± 0,13mm / 0,38 ± 0,16mm /0,38 ± 0,13mm when compared with the limbus and 0,38 ± 0,12/ 0,37± 0,19 mm/ 0,36 ± 0,16 mm when compared with the dilated pupil. There was no statistically significant difference in decentration between all three IOLs when compared with the limbus (p=0,973, ANOVA) and the pupil (p=0,939, ANOVA).

Conclusions:

Comparing the three different IOLs none of them showed a statistically significant better centration, when compared with the limbus and the pupil.
