Abstract Details

Purpose:

Purpose: To develop an inexpensive 3D printed exophthalmometer (EX) assistance device (AD) to help make accurate EX more accessible to clinical support staff while also allowing photo documentation with a smart phone camera.

Setting:

Setting: Private 2 provider ophthalmology practice located in Upstate New York, USA.

Methods:

Methods: A Marco EX was dimensionally recorded into Autodesk Fusion. A stationary and sliding mirror path were designed into a plate parallel to EX measurement prisms. A phone clamp, removable handle, and EX clamp attachment were added to the plate. Design was sliced in Cura 3.6.20 (Aleph Objects, Loveland, CO, USA) and printed on a Single Extruder (2.1) LulzBot TAZ 6 PLA (2.85mm) at 380μm resolution. Acrylic mirrors were cut and installed into designated mirror slots on main plate. Three screws were used to hold the handle/clamp to the main plate. Design was tested on the author for verification.

Results:

Results: EX-AD required 6 hours 12 minutes of print time, consuming 14.82 m of filament, translating to 5.82 USD (excluding screws or acrylic mirror). EX-AD resulted in easier EX measurements compared to EX without AD by minimizing parallax errors. Photo documentation with smart phone camera yielded the best photos when Auto Exposure / Auto Focus Lock was turned on and aimed at the mirror assembly. Resolution of smart phone camera was sufficient to record fiduciary marks on EX prism.

Conclusions:

This first generation 3D printed add-on device for EX affords inexpensive photo documentation and greater reliability in taking EX measurements by limiting parallax effects. Total cost was less than 10 USD. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time an EX add-on assistance device has been created with photo-documentation capabilities. However, the smart phone clamp is not a universal design compatible with all smart phones. Future designs will afford better phone compatibility.
