Antibacterial therapy of eye infections due to the capability of microorganisms to form a biofilm

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Compare the activity of eye drops with fluoroquinolone and aminoglycoid in relation to infection associated with biofilm.

Setting:

Recently, the interest of many researchers has been focused on infectious processes associated with the use of intraocular and contact lenses, sutures on the cornea, devices for intubation of the lacrimal canal, glaucoma stents.These devices are the surface on which a microbial biofilm can form and become difficult to treat.

Methods:

The study included 25 patients with purulent-inflammatory lesions of the eye and its adnexa. The ability of the isolated microorganisms to form biofilms by the standard tablet method was determined. To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the drug for microorganisms in the biofilm we used the method with 0.05% tetrazolium chloride solution. To determine the MIC of the drug in free form, the serial dilution method was used.

Results:

In 25patients with inflammatory diseases of the eye, 20 isolates were isolated; negative culture results were obtained in 5 cases. Microorganisms of S. epidermidis were obtained by the etiological structure. All isolated microorganisms had the ability to form a biofilm. The activity of levofloxacin against microorganisms in the biofilm was significantly higher than the activity of tobramycin. Free-form bacteria activity was significantly higher in tobramycin.

Conclusions:

1. Microorganisms that cause infectious processes of the eye have the ability to form a biofilm. 2. For preoperative preparation and postoperative antibacterial therapy, it is advisable to use both antibacterial drugs in combination, while taking into account their pharmaceutical compatibility and observing the dosage regimen.
