Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the effectiveness of accelerated epithelium-off corneal collagen crosslinlinkg (Epi-off-ACXL) with transepithelial corneal collagen crosslinking (TE_ACXL) in patients with progressive keratoconus.

Setting:

Health Ministry University Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital, Ophthalmology Department, İstanbul, Turkey.

Methods:

In this retrospective study 39 eyes of 29 patients with progressive keratoconus who were treated with Epi-off-ACXL (9 mW/cm² for 10 minutes) or TE-ACXL (9 mW/cm² for 10 minutes) were included. Best corrected visual acuity, corneal thickness, maximum keratometry values were compared before CXL, and at 1 months, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months postoperatively.

Results:

This study involved 39 eyes of which 29 had epi-off-ACXL and 10 had TE-ACXL. The mean age of the studied patients were 23,9±6,7 years (15-36 years). We did not observe significant difference between preoperative and 3 months postoperative, 6 months postoperative and 12 months postoperative readings in group analysis.

Conclusions:

Both Epi-off-ACXL and TE-ACXL were similarly effective in treating progressive keratoconus. Further studies are needed with more patients and longer follow up periods are needed to determine whether these methods are comparable in long term.
