Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluation of changes observed in high-order corneal aberrations in keratoconus patients at various stages using Pentacam Scheimpflug camera

Setting:

This study is prospective and includes patients with follow-up keratoconus and patients who were not diagnosed with keratoconus for examination for other reasons. The study was conducted in Mugla Education and Research Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology.

Methods:

Pentacam Scheimpflug camera data of 100 eyes of 50 keratoconus patients and 118 eyes of 59 healthy individuals who applied to our clinic were evaluated prospectively. Eyes with keratoconus were classified into 3 groups according to their average keratometry values (those with less than 47 D were mild, those between 47-52 D were medium, and those with more than 52 D were heavy). Corneal aberrations were measured at a pupil diameter of 6 mm. The demographic characteristics, total aberration, high order aberration, coma and spherical aberration values of the patients were recorded.

Results:

The mean age in the keratoconus group (21 K, 29 E) was 29.7 ± 10.3 years, and 32.1 ± 12.4 years in the control group (26 K, 33 E). The groups were compatible in terms of age and gender (p = 0.11, p = 0.76, respectively). In the classification made according to keratometry values, keratoconus level was mild in 63 eyes, moderate in 23 eyes and severe in 14 eyes. The difference between low-order astigmatism, trefoil, coma, tetrafoil, high-order astigmatism, high-order spherical aberration and root square mean values measured in keratoconus eyes and healthy eyes was significant. The difference between the corneal aberration values measured in keratonus groups formed according to keratometry values was statistically significant.

Conclusions:

As the keratoconus stage increases, the change in the higher order aberrations of the cornea is observed.
