Changes in corneal thickness after corneal endothelial transplantation (DSaEK)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the change of corneal thickness after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSaEK).

Setting:

CK St. Mary’s Eye Center, Seoul, Republic of Korea

Methods:

The current retrospective study investigated 24 eyes of 24 patients undergoing corneal endothelial transplantation from June 2019 to December 2019 at CK St. Mary’s Eye Center. The mean age of patients was 63.5 ±12.7 years. The corneal and endothelial thickness was measured by an optical coherence tomography (OCT), and all measurements were performed 1day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, and 2 months postoperatively. At each visit, the best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was recorded

Results:

At 2 months after DSaEK, central corneal thickness and endothelial thickness decreased from 796.9 μm (range, 542-900 μm) to 617.6 μm (range, 507-756 μm) and from 136.7 μm (range, 60-221 μm) to 84.4 μm (range, 43-129 μm), and the decrease ratio of thickness was 22.5% and 39.3%, respectively. The mean of central corneal and endothelial thickness gradually decreased from 1 day to 2 months after DSAEK, especially from 2 weeks (632.8 um, 20.6% and 87.4um, 36.1%). Endothelial cell density decreased from 2682 cells/mm2 (range, 2247-3106 cells/mm2) to 1521 cells/mm (range, 529-2710 cells/mm2) after DSaEK. Preoperative median BSCVA was 0.06 (range, -0.5-0.06). At 2 months, median BSCVA was 0.4 (range, -0.6 to 0.8) after DSaEK.

Conclusions:

In this study, changes of the central corneal and endothelial thickness after DSaEK were observed from 1day to 2 months, and a significant decrease in both thickness was observed at 2 weeks
