Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the efficacy of Keratacx355 and Kerarings355 ICRS in order to determine effectiveness of cross-section design on visual, refractive, keratometry factors and corneal aberration

Setting:

Vision Health Research Center, Semnan University of Medical sciences

Methods:

This study included 42 eyes in two groups of patients with central keratoconous that divided in two Kratacx plus355 (21 eyes) and Keraring355 (21 eyes) ICRS implantation. All mentioned variables were analyzed in each group separately and compared between groups with an average follow-up of 11.21±2.951 months.

Results:

The mean uncorrected visual acuity improved by 0.34±0.069 logMAR in Kratacx and 0.47±0.077 logMAR in Keraring. The decrease in the spherical equivalent of each group was statistically significant, by -4.01±0.783 and by -4.65±0.347, respectively. The changes of UCVA, SE and steepK were not statistically different between two groups . In Kratacx group, the defocus and horizontal trefoil aberrations showed a significant increase and in Keraring group, in addition to the decrease in defocus, the root mean square of high-order aberrations decreased; however, no significant differences were found between the corneal aberrometric changes in both groups.

Conclusions:

Although both rings improve significantly visual acuity, make flatter the anterior corneal surface and decrease of spherical equivalent and corneal astigmatism significantly, There is no statistically differences between them. So, it can be concluded the differences in cross-sectional design of rings do not affect corneal aberrations and visual functions
