Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluating and comparing efficacy of various treatment methods of keratoconus

Setting:

Сenter of Eye Microsurgery VOKA, Minsk, Belarus

Methods:

A retrospective analysis of various treatment methods of 201 patients with keratoconus (KC) was performed: -transepithelial cross-linking (CXL) - 38 patients; CXL Dresden protocol - 41 patients; CXL Athens Protocol - 43 patients; KC + IOL implantation - 42 patients; KC + donor corneal segments implantation in the limbal zone - 37 patients.

Results:

In our opinion, with a progressive course of KC and a corneal thickness of 400-450 microns transepithelial CXL is appropriate; with a thickness of the cornea 450-500 microns Dresden protocol CXL is preferable; regardless of the thickness of the cornea, implantation of donor corneal segments in the limbal zone can be performed. With keratoconus stability and a corneal thickness of 450-500 microns the Athens protocol CXL provides good visual results. With proven stability of KC IOL implantation is a good option to increase the visual function of patients.

Conclusions:

The results of treatment according to the specified protocols are comparable in their safety and efficacy.
