Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of a single treatment with LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System on signs of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and dry eye symptoms over a 6-month period.

Setting:

Innova Ocular ICO Barcelona

Methods:

Patients (n = 60 eyes, 30 subjects) diagnosed with MGD and dry eye symptoms were treated with LipiFlow®. Patients received a single 14-minute treatment using the LipiFlow® on each eye. LipiFlow® device applies heat (42.5ºC) to the conjunctival surfaces of both eyelids while simultaneously applying pulsatile pressure to the outer eyelid surfaces to express the meibomian glands. Patient symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI); tear break-up time (TBUT); Oxford test; lissamine green test and meibography with Keratograph 5M Oculus. Data are presented for patient’s pre-treatment and 6-month post-treatment.

Results:

LipiFlow resulted in significant improvement in MG secretion and TBUT at 1 month and in 6 months (7.85+/- 4.15; p < 0.05). LipiFlow resulted in improvement in OSDI test. No changes have been reported in Oxford test, lissamine green test, meiboscale and in Schirmer I test. Meibography test shows structural improvements in MG.

Conclusions:

LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System is a new technological advancement for the treatment of dry eye disease secondary to MGD. A single 14-minute LipiFlow® treatment results more than 6 months of sustained improvement of meibomian gland function, tear break-up time and dry eye symptoms.
