Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study is to compare the in-vitro survival time for Demodex mites to different treatments: NAVIBLEF Strong®, a buffered saline solution (BSS) and an extract of Tea Tree Oil (TTO) 50%.

Setting:

Vissum Miranza, Alicante Spain

Methods:

We collected 235 eyelashes from 24 patients with chronic blepharitis. The eyelashes were analysed under the light microscope to detect any changes in the movement or morphology of the Demodex mites. A continuous observation was done for the 82 Demodex for a minimum of 240 minutes. The population of mites from each patient was divided into 3 groups due to the sensibility of the Demodex. One group did not receive any treatment, only buffered saline solution (BSS) was added and this was the control group. Another group received NAVIBLEF Strong® solution, and the last one received 50% TTO.

Results:

There was a clear observation about the death of Demodex mites after the application of NAVIBLEF® Strong, even though the drying effect may have decreased the size of their body, nevertheless the eyelashes they became cleaner. For the BSS the time for the adult to die was of 1250 minutes while with NAVIBLEF® Strong 52 minutes and 50% TTO 13 minutes. The killing time was slightly longer when the Demodex were protected beneath the cylindrical dandruffs CD. Both Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis were sensitive to NAVIBLEF® Strong.

Conclusions:

The results conclude that NAVIBLEF® Strong tested in vitro kills Demodex mites. This product is very useful to treat patients with chronic blepharitis.
