Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the seven-year prevalence of pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome/glaucoma amongst patients undergoing cataract surgery in a tertiary referral hospital in Thessaloniki, Greece, as well as pre-, peri- and postoperative data for these patients, and compare the results to Greek and European standards using the EUREQUO database.

Setting:

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki A’ Ophthalmology Department

Methods:

Retrospective, chart review study of cataract surgery cases with PEX performed between 2/2013 and 2/2020. Parameters including patient characteristics, type of surgery and perioperative manoeuvres employed, difficulties and complications, preoperative visual acuity and final visual outcomes, were analysed.

Results:

Out of the 1478 patients included, 113 (7.64%) had PEX syndrome and 42 (2.84%) had PEX glaucoma. Mean age of PXF group was 76 (47.10 % female, 52.90% male). 85.81% had a preoperative visual acuity of worse than 6/13 and 14.19% equal to or better than 6/13. Postoperative visual acuity was equal or superior to 6/7 in 7.79% of patients, with 54.35% having a BCVA of at least 6/7.6 and 75% at least 6/13. 25% of cases had a final BCVA inferior to 6/13. 98,7% were subjected to phacoemulsification and in 1.3% a conversion to extracapsular extraction was needed. In 24.24% of cases a mechanical dilation of the iris was required. Complications included posterior capsule tear (7.07%), corneal opacification (5.05%) and vitreous loss (2%).

Conclusions:

PXF appears not to be uncommon amongst older patients and is associated with well-established difficulties and complications. Our seven-year data is comparable to that of both Greece and Europe.
