IOL implantation time related to intraocular pressure using a CO2 driven preloaded injector: in vitro study

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Measurement of the implantation time of the IOL at different intraocular pressures using the AutonoMe® injector.

Setting:

David J Apple Laboratory, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg

Methods:

In this experimental study an IOP of 20, 50, and 80 mmHg is generated in porcine eyes. For this purpose, a phacoemulsification of the lens is performed, a trocar is inserted at pars plana of the porcine eye and an infusion is connected. The different IOPs are generated by changing the height of the infusion. 12 AutonoMe ® (Alcon Inc.) injectors were used and the Clareon® IOL was implanted via a corneal incision of 2.2 mm. A video of the implantation is recorded. The duration of the implantation of the IOL at the different intraocular pressures are measured.

Results:

The results of this study showed a significant (p<0.05) extension of mean implantation time by approximately 1 second with an IOP of 80 mmHg compared to the 20 mmHg group. There was no significant difference between the other groups.

Conclusions:

The AutonoMe ® injector allows a reliable injection even at high intraocular pressures. At high intraocular pressures the implantation time is slightly extended but this is not clinically relevant
