Axial length shortening after cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate axial length (AL) changes, using optical biometry, in eyes that underwent cataract surgery.

Setting:

University Eye Clinic, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry, “Scuola Medica Salernitana”, University of Salerno, Italy.

Methods:

36 eyes of 36 patients (19 females), that underwent unilateral cataract surgery between January and February 2019, were recruited. Before surgery, patients underwent a complete ophthalmic evaluation, including optical biometry using a Tomey OA-2000 Optical Biometer; the same exams were repeated at least one month after surgery. The AL changes between pre- and post -operative examination were evaluated.

Results:

mean AL difference with pseudophakic option was -0.12 ± 0.007 mm (range: -0.21 to +0.07 mm) , (p<0.001); mean AL difference with aphakic option was 0.001 ± 0.0 mm (range: -0.1 to +0.19 mm ), (p= 0.94).

Conclusions:

after cataract surgery, there is reduction in AL measurerment with pseudophakic option, that is not detected with the aphakic option. These results are probably due to an incorrect estimation of group refractive index in phakic eyes.
