Analysis of the distortion of light in patients operated with intraocular lens in the posterior chamber

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study is to analyze the distortion produced by a point of light in patients operated with posterior chamber intraocular lens.

Setting:

Vissum Alicante, Spain

Methods:

A prospective study was carried out in which 105 eyes of 105 patients were divided into three groups: 20 monofocal intraocular lens, 39 multifocal refractive intraocular lens and 46 multifocal diffractive intraocular lens. The measurement of this light distortion was quantified by a validated instrument, the Light Distortion Analizer® (CEORLab, University of Minho, Portugal). A descriptive analysis of the visual acuity was made without correction and with correction in far and near vision (UDVA and CDVA, respectively), and of the distortion parameters of the light: distortion index, distortion area, circle radius better adjusted (BFCR) and best-fit circle irregularity (BFCI).

Results:

The distortion index for monofocal lenses was 17.99±6.67 %, the distortion area 3617±1362 mm2, the BFCR was 34.13±6.47 mm and the BFCI was 0.41±0.27 mm. For diffractive multifocal lenses, the distortion index was 33.88±16.29 %, the distortion area 6525±3386 mm2, the BFCR was 46.45±10.53 mm and the BFCI was 0.47±0.48 mm. For refractive multifocal lenses, the distortion index was 18.46±9.66 %, the distortion area 3577±2012 mm2, the BFCR was 34.17±7.87 mm and the BFCI was 0.78±0.73 mm.

Conclusions:

Diffractive multifocal lenses cause more distortion of light than refractive multifocal lenses, which in turn cause more distortion of light than monofocal lenses.
