The EyeCee One: real world outcomes in a cohort of over 3,000 patients in a secondary centre in the UK

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The EyeCee One (Bausch and Lomb) is a monofocal, posteriorly square-edged, modified C-loop intra-ocular lens. Available power ranges from +11 to +30 dioptres (D) in 0.5D increments. Proposed advantages include; minimal post-operate glare, haptic design maximising intra-capsular stability and reduced surgical time given the pre-loaded design. As per the Royal College of Ophthalmologists guidance we present the objective post-operative outcomes of patients undergoing cataract surgery in our unit since we introduced the EyeCee one lens in 2018.

Hull and East Yorkshire Eye Hospital, UK

Methods:

A retrospective study of patients that had undergone phacoemulsifcation with intraocular lens insertion with an Eyecee one was conducted. All cases were completed at a single large secondary Ophthalmic centre serving over 600,000 patients. The grade of operating surgeon ranged from consultant to year one trainees. All patients had been seen in a one-stop, consultant-led cataract clinic where both clinical assessment and biometry were undertaken. Post-operative data was collected by means of a standardised proforma returned by optometrists after a four-week post-operative follow-up. The primary outcome of the study was the concordance of the predicted and actual post-operative spherical equivalent.

Results:

3184 eyes of patients aged between 30 and 99 (mean 51 years) were included. 2445 (80%) of patients had an improvement in their best post-operative corrected visual acuity post operatively, 5 (0.15%) had unchanged acuity and 105 (3.4%) had inferior visual acuity using a Snellen visual acuity chart. 2006 patients (65.6%) had a post-operative spherical equivalent prediction (SD) within 0-0.49D and over 96% within 0 to 1SD. Only 6 (5.7%) patients had a post-operative refraction worse than 2SD from their prediction. The data was collected 4 weeks post operatively. Subgroup analysis of co-morbidities and lens calculation formulas were also undertaken.

Conclusions:

We conclude that there is excellent concordance between the predicted and actual post-operative spherical equivalent in patients that underwent phacoemulsification and insertion of the EyeCee One lens in our unit since 2018. Our post operative refraction is within 0.5 – 1D of predicted spherical equivalent as per College guidelines despite having over 15 consultants using a standardised A constant. The evaluation of subjective and long-term outcomes needs to be undertaken.
