Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the efficacy of stand-alone Phaco versus Phaco + micro-interventional fragmentation

Setting:

Centro De Cirugia Intra-ocular

Methods:

Methods: Grade 3 and higher cataracts were randomized to phaco stand-alone versus phaco plus micro-interventional lens fragmentation with the miLoop technique and device. Efficacy of lens fragmentation, efficiency of phaco energy and fluidics and safety outcomes were followed intra-operatively and through 1 month post-op.

Results:

Results: 50 cases were randomized to either Phaco or Phaco plus micro interventional fragmentation. Baseline demographics and lens status were well balanced between the two randomized groups. All cases were Grade 3 or higher. All cases were done by four experienced phaco surgeons who used the latest generation Centurion phaco machines and torsional ultrasound settings. The Phaco only group showed 35-40% higher levels of both CDE and total fluidics compared to the Phaco plus micro- interventional segmentation. The difference was statistically and clinically significant. There were not differences in surgical safety between the two groups

Conclusions:

Conclusion: Significant improvements in phaco efficiency and energy can be achieved by using adjunct micro-interventional lens fragmentation
