Abstract Details

Purpose:

For patients aged over 21 with high myopia and efficient accommodation amplitude implantation of phakic IOL is the only acceptable option of surgical refractive error correction. The aim of the paper is to present clinical results of bilateral implantation of EVO Visian ICL phakic IOL.

Setting:

Oftalmika Eye Clinic, Bydgoszcz, Poland

Methods:

51 patients aged 30.4 (22-37 years old) after bilateral implantation of EVO Visian ICL (Staar Surgical, USA) were enrolled in this retrospective study. Preoperative mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) was -10.55ᄆ3.61 DS and refractive cylinder -1.85ᄆ1.34 DC. Refractive results including predictability, safety and efficacy were evaluated postoperatively after 1 to 5 years.

Results:

Except for one procedure with lens unfolding invertedly, all surgeries were uneventful (98.04%). In 19.6% of eyes increase of IOP was observed within first hours following implantation. Postoperative MRSE and mean refractive cylinder was 0.08ᄆ0.15 DS and -0.07ᄆ0.11 DC, respectively. No decrease of best corrected visual acuity was noted, while 58.5% of eyes gained 1, 2 or 3 lines. In one eye a trace of anterior subcapsular cataract was observed, however, it did not alter visual acuity.

Conclusions:

Bilateral implantation of EVO Visian ICL phakic IOL is an effective, safe and predictable method of high myopia surgical correction in eyes with efficient accommodation.
