Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the prevalence of corneal astigmatism between Turkish population and Syrian refugees according to age.

Setting:

Kayseri City Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Kayseri, Turkey.

Methods:

The data of patients scheduled for cataract surgery between January 2019 and January 2020 were reviewed. The approximate sample size was computed before the study according to annual surgery prevalence. The patients were selected randomly. The groups were separated according to ethnicity (Turkish/Syrian refugee). A partial coherence interferometry (IOLMaster) device was used for keratometry measurements. A quantitative analysis with linear regression models were performed by power vector method (J0 and J45). A relationship between age and astigmatism was explored in two groups.

Results:

The study included 4085 eyes of 2049 patients (3962 eyes of Turkish and 123 eyes of Syrian). The mean corneal astigmatism was significantly higher in Syrians at ages<40 years (p:0.020) than Turkish people. Against the rule astigmatism (ATR) prevalence was greater in Syrian eyes than Turkish eyes at all ages. ATR astigmatism shift began at younger ages in Syrian eyes (0.027). The mean J0 significantly decreased with age in both populations (p:<0.0001). No relationship was found between J45 and age in both populations (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

ATR astigmatism was greater and started earlier in Syrian eyes than in Turkish eyes.
