Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a photocromic contact lens on contrast sensitivity in a patient with albinism.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Meram Faculty of Medicine, Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya, Turkey.
Methods:
A 15-year-old female with oculocutaneous albinism was fitted with a photocromic contact lens (Acuvue Oasys with Transitions, Johnson&Johnson Vision Care, Jacksonville, FL, USA). The distance visual acuity was assessed using Snellen's chart under standard room illumination and binocular dynamic contrast sensitivity was measured before and after lens fitting using MonPackOne vision monitor (Metrovision, Perenchies, France) at 200 cm distance under photopic conditions.
Results:
Distance viual acuity before contact lenses fitting was 3/10 in the right eye, 4/10 in the left eye, and did not change with contact lenses. At 0.55, 1.2, 2.4, 3.6, 7.6, and 15.1 cpd spatial frequencies; binocular dynamic contrast sensitivity was 8, 8, 6, 6, 3, 0 db before lens fitting and 10, 10, 9, 6, 4, 0 db after lens fitting, respectively.
Conclusions:
In a patient with albinism, a photocromic contact lens slightly improved the contrast sensitivity, especially in low spatial frequencies.
