Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe the indications, surgical techniques and results obtained with the use of amniotic membrane trasplants (TMA) at Fundacion Jimenez Diaz Universitary Hospital (FJD)
Setting:
Amniotic Membranes (MA) were employed for treating different ocular surface diseases of FJD patients. They were supplied by the tissue bank of Leon, Getafe, Balearic Islands and Barcelona.
Methods:
Retrospective analysis of the FJD database over the past two years, in 75 patients undergoing TMA. Previous opthalmological and pathological history, suegical techniques employed, prior TMA, complications and number of necessary post-surgery consultations were evlaluated.
Results:
75 patients received a TMA in FJD between 2018-2019 with the most common etiology being infectious corneal ulcer (62,7%), followed by corneal opacity (9,3%), keratopathy (6,7%), injuries (5,3%), corneal degeneration (4%). 61,3% patients were women and the average age was 68.85+/-18.48 years. 17,3% TMA were carried out by a complication of a prior keratoplasty, while im 18,7% simultaneous TMA and keratoplasty were performed. 68% did not have any postoperative complications.
Conclusions:
The anti-inflamatory, anti-scar tissue and antiangiogenic properties of MA have been shown to be effective in treating different ocular surface diseases. The use of TMA in previous deep penetrating keratoplasty and lamellar keratoplasties (DALK) has optimal results and prevents the appearance of post-surgical ulcers. The development of new surgical techniques and new tissue preservation methods allows to implement its use in clinical practice, achieving ever-increasing satisfactory results rates.
