Abstract Details
Purpose:
to evaluate the retinal ganglion cell complex (GCL-IPL) by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in pseudophakic eyes of children, following surgery for congenital and developmental cataracts.
Setting:
Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology, University Clinical Center for Ophthalmology and Oncology prof. K. Gibi?skiego, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland.
Methods:
The study included 64 eyes in 32 children (23 boys and 9 girls), mean age 9.7 years ( 3.8). Both eyes were operated on in 18 children, one eye in 14 children. The study group consisted of 53 eyes after implantation of artificial foldable intraocular lenses, the comparative group of 14 unoperated eyes in the same children. Visual acuity for distance, intraocular pressure, average and minimum GCL + IPL thickness were assessed. The tests were performed using the Cirrus HD-OCT device by Carl Zeiss Meditec Ver.7.0. The results were analyzed statistically with the assumed significance level of ? = 0.05.
Results:
The mean visual acuity in the study group was 0.6 ( 0.3), similar to comparative group 0.7 ( 0.3). The mean value of the intraocular pressure in the study group was 16.8 ( 2.8), in the control group 17.4 ( 2.5). Mean minimal GCL-IPL and average complex thickness in test group were - 61.04 m ( 25.4) and 75.46 m ( 16.18); in the control group - 64.64 m ( 25.58) and 78.71 m ( 11.34) respectively. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in the GCL-IPL complex between the operated and control groups.
Conclusions:
The thickness of the retinal ganglion cell complex (GCL-IPL) in children with pseudophakia after congenital and developmental cataract surgery does not differ from that in healthy children.
