Abstract Details

Purpose:

eyes injuries in pediatric population often lead to cataract formation. Traumatic cataract surgery in a visually immature child is a major challenge and can result in poor visual outcome.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Unit A, Hopital des Sp�cialit�s Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco

Methods:

We conducted a retrospective study of 48 children with traumatic cataracts collected in the ophthalmology department between January 2017 and December 2020This study focused on the circumstances of the trauma, the consultation time, the initial lesion assessment, surgical techniques, functional results and complications

Results:

Forty-eight (48 ) children under eighteen (18) years old were selected. The average age was 6.21 years. The male gender was predominant with a sex ratio of 4.33. A majority of patients had penetrating injuries (62.5%).The patients may have broken anterior capsule for 27 children (56.25%). The associated lesions were dominated by corneal wound (60.42%). All the children were implanted, including 40 in the capsular bag (83.33%) and 5 fixed in the ciliary sulcus(10.42%). In our present study, 37.5% of the eyes achieved a final visual acuity of <1/10, 56.25% of eyes between 1/10 and 5/10.

Conclusions:

Traumatic cataracts are the cause of blindness in children. It is possible and necessary to prevent trauma to the eyes of the child, by monitoring games and keeping potentially dangerous objects away
