Abstract Details

Purpose:

This prospective study investigates the first clinical outcomes after bilateral implantation of LuxSmart (Bausch & Lomb, France) extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL has a 2 mm EDOF center created by a combination of 4th and 6th order spherical aberrations of opposite signs, which aims to provide high-quality vision at far distances and improved useful vision at intermediate distances. The aim of this study was to indicate visual acuity potentials in far, intermediate, near distances, contrast sensitivity as well as dysphotopsia effects.

Setting:

Gemini Eye Clinic, Zlin, Czech Republic

Methods:

In this ongoing surgeon-initiated clinical study, 30 patients (60 eyes) were implanted with LuxSmart lenses as part of standard cataract surgery. Follow-up examinations at 1 week and 1, 3, 6 months included Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UDVA), Corrected Distance Visual Acuity (CDVA), Uncorrected (UIVA) and Distance Corrected Intermediate Visual Acuity (DCIVA) at 66 cm and 80 cm, Uncorrected (UNVA) and Distance Corrected Near Visual Acuity (DCNVA) at 40 cm. Distance-corrected defocus curves are recorded between -2.5 D and +1.5 D in 0.5 D steps. CatQuest-9SF, spectacle independence questionnaire, contrast sensitivity, and halo/glare are evaluated at 6 months assessment.

Results:

The interim results on 54 eyes at 1 month and 22 eyes at 3 months postoperative show mean refractive outcomes (MRSE) 0.34ᄆ0.39 D and -0.44ᄆ0.44 D respectively. Mean monocular UDVA, UIVA (80cm), UIVA (66cm) and UNVA (40cm) in logMAR are 0.07ᄆ0.13, 0.05ᄆ0.11, 0.09ᄆ0.12 and 0.29ᄆ0.15 at 1 month; and 0.11ᄆ0.15, 0.04ᄆ0.16, 0.09ᄆ0.15 and 0.25ᄆ0.13 at 3 months. Mean monocular CDVA, DCIVA (80cm), DCIVA (66cm) and DCNVA (40cm) in logMAR are -0.01ᄆ0.08, 0.06ᄆ0.13, 0.10ᄆ0.13 and 0.34ᄆ0.15 at 1 month; and -0.01ᄆ0.08, 0.04ᄆ0.16, 0.13ᄆ0.16 and 0.36ᄆ0.16 at 3 months. Defocus curve shows ?0.2 logMAR range between -2.0 D to +0.75 D.

Conclusions:

LuxSmart should comfortably fit the American National Standard Institute for EDOF IOL. The interim outcomes after implantation of LuxSmart show excellent restoration of visual functions for far and intermediate distances. The near visual acuity is interestingly also very good. The patients after LuxSmart implantation should benefit in daily activities of a modern lifestyle such as working on computers, tablets, mobile phones, etc. In the presentation, the outcomes of a longer follow and contrast sensitivity up will be presented.
