Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the visual, refractive and aberrometric state in patients implanted with the diffractive intraocular lens based on DLU to optimize light distribution, likewise to compare preoperative and postoperative data in different phases of the follow-up period.

Setting:

Vissum Miranza, Alicante, Spain

Methods:

Pilot longitudinal study composed by patients implanted with the innovative intraocular lens Intensity (Hanita Lenses) due to cataract or desire to eliminate spectacle correction. Patients were undergone to a complete optometric and ophthalmologic examination before and after the surgery including measuring of visual acuities (distance, intermediate, near), subjective refraction, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity assessment and ocular aberrometry by a pyramidal aberrometer (Osiris, CSO). Clinical outcomes one month and three months postoperatively were compared with preoperative data by Wilcoxon test using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS, IBM). The present is the interim report of the pilot investigation.

Results:

The study included 8 eyes of 4 patients with a mean age of 63.012.6 years old. A month after Intensity implantation, the mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was 0.870.12 and the mean uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) was 0.660.16 in decimal scale. Both parameters showed better outcomes than preoperatively (UDVA 0.470.32, UNVA 0.100.15, p<0.05) and were stable during the following three months (UDVA 0.860.13, UNVA 0.620.16, p>0.05). Refractive status showed a mean spherical equivalent of 0.000.16 D and an addition of 0.670.52 D. Mean high-order aberrations were 0.150.03?m distributed in coma 0.060.04?m, trefoil 0.060.04?m, and spherical aberration 0.020.04?m.

Conclusions:

The new intraocular lens Intensity, which is based on the DLU algorithm, may provide a suitable visual performance at all distances of sight with a very good quality of vision. It should be confirmed in future studies increasing the sample size.
