Abstract Details
Purpose:
The purpose of this review was to evaluate the literature about the protecting role of H2 in corneal endothelium, dissolved in irrigation solution during phacoemulsification .
Setting:
Mataria teaching hospital
Methods:
A systematic search was performed based on PubMed and Google scholar databases using the following terms: Scavenge free radicals,Hydroxyl radical,Hydrogen in phacoemulsification,Corneal endothelial cell loss,Cytotoxic oxygen radicals .
Results:
In literature that we used we find that ultrasound induces hydroxyl radical (ᄋOH) formation, which cause damage to corneal endothelium. Whether H2 can prevent such oxidative damage in phacoemulsification was examined by in vitro and in vivo studies. Corneal endothelial cell damage can be altered by OVD, I/A setting and H2 dissolved in irrigation solution who had an anti-oxidant protection effect. Also we found that H2 loaded eye drops were highly useful as neuroprotective and antioxidative therapeutic treatment for acute retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Conclusions:
An analysis of the literature showed H2 dissolved in irrigation solution reduced corneal endothelial damage during phacoemulsification. This suggests that a considerable part of the corneal endothelial damage during phacoemulsification is caused by oxidative stress, and that H2 is useful to protect corneal endothelial.
