Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the prediction error (PE) obtained considering the combination of posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA) estimation and corneal surgically induced astigmatism (SIAc) derived from the anterior cornea.
Setting:
Qvision, Vithas Virgen del Mar Hospital, Almer�a, Spain
Methods:
SIAc was calculated with a historical dataset of 204 right eyes (REs) from a single surgeon operating through temporal clear corneal incisions. PE was calculated in 58 REs of patients implanted by the same surgeon with a monofocal toric intraocular lens (IOL) calculated considering the PCA estimation in an online calculator with the combination of SIAc calculated as a function of preoperative astigmatism type.
Results:
SIAc was statistically significant only in cases of preoperative corneal astigmatism against-the-rule (ATR). PE only considering PCA was 0.03@160� for the total sample. The combination with SIAc resulted in a non-significant with-the-rule astigmatism (WTR) surprise (0.09@91�), especially in preoperative ATR (0.22@84�) cases. SIAc addition to PCA estimation only reduced the centroid for oblique preoperative astigmatism.
Conclusions:
Surgeons should be cautious using their historical SIAc derived from anterior cornea in combination with the estimation of PCA used in online calculators because results cannot just not improved but also being worsened.
