Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes and satisfaction in non-presbyopic hyperopic patients who underwent bilateral refractive lens exchange (RLE) with a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and to compare them with presbyopic hyperopic patients.

Setting:

Clinica Baviera, Spain.

Methods:

Patients younger than 40 years underwent bilateral RLE with a diffractive trifocal IOL: FineVision Micro F (PhysIOL SA, Liège, Belgium) for hyperopia with at least 3 months of follow-up. A control group of patients older than 50 years was matched by axial length (AL), sex, and follow-up. Safety, efficacy, predictability, and patient satisfaction were evaluated.

Results:

From 2012 to 2019, we found 266 eligible eyes of 133 patients (mean age, 36.94 years; mean preoperative spherical equivalent +6.29 diopters). After a mean follow-up of 8.83 months, the safety index, efficacy index, and predictability ±1.00 diopter were 1.02%, 0.98%, and 99.62%, respectively which were not different from the control group (mean age 55.72 years). No intraoperative complications occurred. Posterior capsule opacification appeared in 8.27% of the study and 7.89% of the control group. All of the patients in both groups reported spectacle independence for all distances and 97% of patients in both groups reported that they were satisfied.

Conclusions:

RLE for hyperopia in patients without presbyopia is effective, safe, and predictable with a very high rate of patient satisfaction and spectacle independence due to good functional distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity.
