Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the repeatability and acquisition times of six optical biometers based on different optical technologies when acquiring biometry measurements.

Setting:

University of Valencia, Spain

Methods:

In this study 150 eyes of 150 patients were measured with the Aladdin, AL-Scan, Argos, IOLMaster 700, Lenstar LS 900 and OA-2000 optical biometers. Keratometry (K1 and K2), J0 and J45 vectors, central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), axial length (AL), white-to-white (WTW) and pupil size (PS) were measured five times with each device by the same examiner. The total time to acquire the five measurements was registered. Intrasubject standard deviation (Sw), coefficient of repeatability (CoR), Coefficient of variation (CoV) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were obtained for each parameter and biometer.

Results:

ICC values were >0.94 except for WTW measured with the AL-Scan (0.86) and Lenstar LS 900 (0.85). CoV values were <0.30% for K1, K2 and AL, and up to 1.61% for CCT, ACD, LT and WTW. PS showed larger values, from 4.2% to 7.68%. Considering all the ocular parameters assessed, AL measurement provided the highest repeatability, both analyzing CoV and CoR values. In contrast, PS was the parameter with the lowest repeatability. Acquisition time varied between biometers (p<0.001, rANOVA), ranging from 262.82 to 411.94 seconds obtained with the AL-Scan and Lenstar LS 900, respectively.

Conclusions:

The six biometers provide repeatable measurements for the different parameters analyzed. Acquisition times varied significantly as a function of the optical biometer used.
