Abstract Details
Purpose:
Corneal neovascular pathologies are frequent in our context and represent a major public health problem.
Setting:
retrospective study over a period of 3 years on 167 patients followed for corneal neovascularization, followed in the adult ophthalmology department of the hospital August 20, Casablanca, Morocco
Methods:
We used the patient records, followed in consultation between August 2017 and AUGUST 2020, children were excluded, and patients with a non-functional eye since childhood.
Results:
The average age of our patients was 38.15 years ± 20, The etiologies were dominated by infectious causes (52.7%), followed by traumatic (27.3%) and inflammatory (9.1%) causes . The traumatic etiologies were dominated by eye burns (10.3%) and corneal wounds (13.3%). Among the inflammatory aetiologies were atopic keratoconjunctivitis (1.8%), rheumatoid arthritis (3.6%), systemic sclerosis (1.8%) and transplant rejection (1.8%). All patients received at least one subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab. The mean number of injections was 2.76 ± 1.47 (Extremes 1-8). With A reduction of corneal neovessels in 64%.
Conclusions:
Corneal neovascularization reflects the risk of progression to blindness of corneal origin. Corneal abscesses, herpetic keratitis and traumatic causes represent the main etiologies in our context. These causes are preventable, including the benefit of primary prevention
