Abstract Details
Purpose:
Vitiligo is an autoimmune dermatological disorder characterized by a depigmentation of the skin, which may affect the periocular region. An association between this pathology and dry eye disease has recently been described. The etiopathogenesis of this entity has not yet been elucidated. Our work aims to show the characteristics of this association through two cases.
Setting:
Ophthalmology Department Habib Thameur Hospital, Tunis, Tunisia
Methods:
We report two cases of dry eye disease associated with periorbital vitiligo.
Results:
A 12-year-old and a 20-year-old female patients with no family or medical history complained about severe xerophthalmia that has progressed for 5 years and has not been improved by wetting agents. Poliosis and diffuse vitiligo lesions were noted. Ophthalmological examination disclosed moderate meibomitis, multiple corneal sequellae opacities, a Schimer test value limited to 1mm, and diffuse superficial punctate keratitis in both eyes. Given their young age and the severity of the clinical picture, an exhaustive etiological assessment was requested eliminating local causes, vitamin deficiencies, primary and secondary Gougerot Sjogren, Sarcoidosis, and infiltrative pathologies. The association with periorbital vitiligo was retained.
Conclusions:
The association between dry eyes and vitiligo has recently been described. The morphology of the Meibomus gland seems to be modified when there is vitiligo, especially if it is periorbital.
