Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life after implantation of innovative Trifocal Toric IOL in patients with cataract, presbyopia and astigmatism

Setting:

1 Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, Medical University of Silesia, Poland 2 Department of Ophthalmology, Professor K. Gibinski University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

The study included 20 eyes with astigmatism up to 3.0D after bilateral Trifocal Toric IOL (Acrysof IQ Panoptix Toric, Alcon, USA) implantation. IOL were calculated as close to “plano” as possible with Barret TK Universal II formula and alignment of the implant axis using Verion Image Guided System (Alcon, USA). There were carried out distance, intermediate and near VA; independence of eyeglasses, contrast sensitivity test, evaluation of the subjective quality of life with the VF-14 questionnaire, target axis of IOL implantation. Observations were made up to 12 months

Results:

In Snellen decimal scale, a month after surgery mean UCDVA was 0.95, BCDVA 0.99. UCNVA was for the whole group average 0.5 in Snellen scale (70% of patients). UCIVA improved significantly postoperatively (p=0.04). The results of the VF-14 patient satisfaction test show significant differences in points, before 65/100 and after 90/100. Only in 30% of patients small amount of "halo" and “glare” effect occurred. One patient need spectacles for near distance vision. Contrast sensitivity improved significantly in all patients (p<0.05). The mean deviation of the targeted axis of the toric IOL ranged of 2-5 degrees. Neither lens required subsequent rotation

Conclusions:

The quality of active life of astigmatic patient after cataract surgery with Acrysof IQ Panoptix Toric IOL is affected by good vision at different distances, without the need for additional eyeglass correction. It is equally important to reduce the unpleasant photo-optical sensations and improve the contrast vision, because these parameters have a significant impact on the visual functioning of the patient. IOL was stable in targeted axis
