Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the 1-month and 6-month postoperative aberrometric and visual outcomes after bilateral implantation of two different types of intraocular lenses (IOL).

Setting:

Health Science University, Kayseri City Training and Research Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Kayseri, Turkey

Methods:

In this comparative study, concerning 2 multifocal implants with a different design (Acriva Trinova, VSY Biotechnology and TECNIS Eyhance IOL, Johnson & Johnson Vision), 25 patients were randomized in two groups. The uncorrected and corrected distance (UDVA and CDVA), intermediate at 80 cm (UIVA and CIVA), and near at 40 cm (UNVA and CNVA) visual acuities and by using iDesign Advanced Wavescan StudioTM System (Johnson & Johnson Vision) wavefront analysis (total and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) values evaluated as root mean square (RMS) were evaluated.

Results:

The study enrolled 50 eyes of 25 patients. At first month; the mean binocular UDVA-CDVA and UIVA-CIVA were not significantly different between two IOLs (P=0.389, P=0.081 and P=0.756, P=0.623; respectively). The mean binocular UNVA and CNVA were better in Trinova (P=0.02 and P=0.04). At 6th months the mean binocular UDVA and CDVA (P=0.392, P=0.256); UIVA and CIVA (P=0.933 and P=0.856) and UNVA and CNVA (P=0.06, P=0.124) were similar. At 1th month total aberrations and HOAs were similar (P=0.914, P=0823). At 6th months the HOAs values were similar (P=0.154) however, the total aberrations were significantly increased in Trinova group (P=0.03).

Conclusions:

High visual outcomes at all distances were observed in both groups with better results in Trinova group on UNVA and CNVA at first month. This superiority was balanced at 6th months that 2 IOLs were similar on UNVA and CNVA. Although total and HOAs were similar at first month, the total aberrations were increased at 6th months postoperatively. The slight difference between the 2 IOLs in total aberrations would invite to consider the possible visual disturbances (e.g. glare and halos) might be caused by these aberrations.
