Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the change of anterior chamber angle morphology after cataract surgery in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, İstanbul Medipol University, İstanbul,Turkey

Methods:

In this prospective and comparative study, 57 eyes of the patients with cataract were investigated. The patients were divided in two groups. Group 1 was study group including diabetic patients with cataract (n=30), group 2 was control group including normal subject except those with cataract (n=27). AS-OCT examinations were performed 1 week before and 1 week after cataract surgery. The angle, angle opening distance at 500 µm (AOD-500) and trabecular iris space area at 500 µm (TISA-500) in temporal quadrant were obtained and analyzed.

Results:

Age, gender and axial length were similar in both groups (p>0.05). The angle, AOD-500 and TISA-500 were increased and the intraocular pressure decreased after cataract surgery in entire study population (p<0.001). There was not any statistically significant difference between diabetic patients and normal subjects regarding changes of anterior angle parameters (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

The anterior chamber angle changed significantly after cataract surgery in patients with diabetes mellitus and healthy subjects.
