Abstract Details

Purpose:

To prospectively evaluate the visual function and subjective experience after bilateral implantation of a novel EDOF IOL.

Setting:

Dept Ophthalmology, University Hospital Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Methods:

In 24 eyes of 12 cataract patients phaco was performed with bilateral implantation of a new EDOF intraocular lens (IOL), ie Vivity Extended Range of Vision (Alcon, Ft Worth, US). Refraction was targetted for mini-monovision (0.25-0.50D myopia in non-dominant eye; emmetropia in dominant eye). Snellen visual acuity at 6 mtr, and 66 and 45 cm was established 1 month postoperatively, as well as patient reported photic phenomena and the use of reading glasses.

Results:

Monocular UDVA and CDVA were -0.01+/-0.09 LogMAR and -0.08+/-0.05 LogMAR respectively. Binocular UIVA and UNVA were 0.15+/-0.37 and 0.23+/-0.40 LogMAR respectively. Halos and glare were reported in 8.7 and 0% of cases respectively. Reading glasses were necessary in 35% of cases.

Conclusions:

The Vivity EDOF IOL provides excellent visual acuity results for far and intermediate distances, with few optical complaints. Reading glasses were necessary in 35% of cases whilst using mini-monovision. Added patients and longer follow-up data will be presented.
