Visual quality after LASIK and Femto-LASIK

Purpose:

To evaluate the rate of recovery quality of vision after femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK Femto LDV (Ziemer, Switzerland) and microkeratome-assisted LASIK Moria-3 SBK OUP (Moria, France).

Setting:

: S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Institution, Moscow

Methods:

The retrospective study was conducted on 246 myopic patients. First group included 125 (250 eyes) patients who underwent Lasik with mechanical microkeratome Moria. Flap thickness was 90 mkm. Second group included 121 patients (242 eyes) who underwent Femto-LASIK. Flap thickness was 90 mkm. Mean age 28,1 ± 0,72 years, SE -4,4 ± 0,38. The quality of vision assessment was performed pre- and postoperatively (1 – 6 month) in both groups using Optec 6500 (Stereo Optical company, USA) and included measurement of BCVA visual acuity in photopic (85 cd/m) and mesopic (30 cd/m) conditions with and without glare. Spatial contrast sensitivity was assessed using FACT (functional acuity contrast test) in photopic and mesopic conditions. In both groups ablation was performed using MicroScan CFP excimer laser (Optosystems, Troitsk, Russia). Optical zone was 6,5 mm, transition zone – 8,0 mm.

Results:

1. After Femto-Lasik visual acuity under photopic and mesopic light conditions was higher than accustomed-correction visual acuity and higher than best spectacle-corrected visual acuity before the surgery. 2. Contrast sensitivity under photopic conditions after Femto-Lasik recovered to preoperative level in 1 month after the surgery, and after microkeratome-assisted LASIK – in 6 month. 3. Contrast sensitivity under mesopic conditions after both types of surgeries recovered in 6 month post.op., with higher affinity to preoperative values after FemtoLasik. 4. Femto-Lasik provides better contrast sensitivity recovery in high spatial frequency comparing to microkeratome-assisted LASIK.

Conclusions:

Our study demonstrates that Femto-Lasik provides better vision function results and faster recovery of the quality of vision comparing to microkeratome-assisted LASIK.
