Bilateral multifocal IOL implantation as a method of presbyopia correction

Purpose:

The purpose is to present results of bilateral multifocal IOL implantation as a presbyopia correction method.

Setting:

: All bilateral multifocal IOL implantation surgeries were performed on the out-patient basis at Wroclaw Eye Center, Wroclaw, Poland. All surgeries were performed by one surgeon.

Methods:

Bilateral multifocal IOL implantation is currently the most popular surgical approach for treatment of presbyopia. 35 patient were qualified for surgical correction of presbyopia with clear natural lens or early cataractous changed lens. All patients manifested healthy macular region and had good vision at all distances with appropriate correction. The patients age ranged from 42-65 years old with the mean of 53,5 years old.

Results:

At 6 months follow-up the patients’ mean binocular uncorrected visual acuity was 0,15 logMAR at 4.0 meters and 0.14 logMAR at 40 centimeters. Their mean distance corrected visual acuity values were 0,01 logMAR at 4.0 meters and 0,07 logMAR at 40 centimeter.

Conclusions:

The bilateral multifocal IOL implantation is a successful method for presbyopia correction, allowing patients to function without glasses on daily basis.
