A new way of marking the cornea for toric IOL implantation

Purpose:

To explore the possibility of subdividing axes of the cornea without special-purpose tools.

Setting:

: Siberian State Medical University

Methods:

To determine the vertical meridian makes a mark at 12 o'clock in the limbal part of cornea in sitting position of the patient under control of slit lamp. We applied limb scarification (scratch) by means of Injection needle dipped in 0.5% solution of brilliant green.

Results:

By means of this procedure 10 patients were operated. Marks remained in limbo for more than 24 hours While the marks applied by means of traditional methods disappeared after 1-2 hours. All patients within 6 months after the operation had correct position of IOL

Conclusions:

Scarification of the cornea using a dye allows for more than 24 hours to determine the axis for toric IOL implantation
